The emphasis should be on repairing the worn system in an economical and practical manner.  Since garden sprinklers are complicated systems, the biggest headache would be to find out the problem, once the sprinkler gets damaged.  Once the problem is determined, you can simply change the faulty component and the sprinkler would start functioning normally once again.

Most sprinkler systems consist of a main inlet and a sprinkler head.  The main line gets damaged very often when the owner is either mowing his lawn or aerating the soil.  Sprinkler heads can break due to high pressure, exposure to heat and cold for longer durations, extensive use etc.

You can repair the main line easily after determining the place of damage.  Usually, puddles would form around places of line damage.  Dig deep enough in the area and expose the pipe where it is damaged.  The damaged portions would invariably have to be removed using a hacksaw or pipe cutter.  The cut has to be smooth and straight so as to facilitate easy repair. Expansion repair couplings are the best ones to replace the cut off portions of the pipe.  You can fix them up with the existing line by using a high quality adhesive.

If the sprinkler head is broken, you need to unscrew the head in such a way that the riser is not pulled out.  Remove debris, if any and fit in a brand new one in the place of the old one because it is not economical to repair broken heads.  The riser also gets damaged occasionally.  As in the case of the head, riser also needs to be replaced. Timely sprinkler system repair is essential so that your plants are not deprived of their daily dose of watering.
